Social Justice Faculty-Led

This Social Justice Faculty-Led program traces the legacy of the apartheid system in South Africa, pointing out social and economic policies and their ramifications for the well-being of different groups in the population. The South African constitution prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, culture, gender, language and sexual orientation. On this program the students embark on a journey to learn about the diversity and culture rich history of South Africa and its people.

Learning outcome

Examine key themes in the country’s colonial past.
Examine the extent to which colonisation has had an impact on issues the country currently faces.
Examine key local leaders who led the fight against apartheid.
Examine the various strategies and ideologies used to form and achieve democracy locally and globally.
Examine why historical sites play a key role in preserving history in a local and global context.
Examine and compare the key similarities and differences of local democratic practices with those of their home country.
